Over Aggressiveness

Training a dog to be aggressive isn’t half as hard as training one NOT to be aggressive.

Socialized K-9

If you bought a big or aggressive breed of dog for protection it does no good if he/she can’t be near you, around people when it’s time to protect you.

Are Mutts Smarter?

True or false: Mutts are smarter than pure breeds. Answer: False. This may surprise many people but there is still no evidence to support this statement. However mixed-breed dogs are less distracted by instinct than pure-bred dogs. All dogs are distracted by canine instinct which is why they need training not to survive but to coexist within their human families and society. If all dogs were suddenly set free it would be their instincts that tell them how to survive. Their instincts would tell them to pack together, work together and hunt to survive.

Because pure-bred dogs are distracted not only by their canine instincts but also by the instincts bred into them at high levels they are often times more easily distracted. Once distracted they are also more difficult to get focused back on the task at hand. Bird dogs will be distracted by birds. Coon Hounds will be distracted by Coons. Grey Hounds will be distracted by the desire to run after small and large game, and Pit Bulls will be distracted by their desire to fight dogs and other animals.

Bottom line, before buying a pure-bred dog make sure that you learn not only about the dog’s breed and what it was originally bred for, ask the breeder how close is your dog to the last generation of performance dogs in that line. If the breeder doesn’t know then chances are the dog is fairly well removed and won’t have excessive inbred instincts to interfere with training and human coexistence. By excessive I mean that the instinct interferes with the dog’s ability to live cohesively in a human family. However, if the dog is only one or two generations removed from the performance dogs in his/her line then expect that he/she will be easily distracted and need constant focus and strict training to go into public
