If you bought a big or aggressive breed of dog for protection it does no good if he/she can’t be near you, around people when it’s time to protect you.
Is Adoption Better than Rearing?
Understand that when adopting an older dog or rearing a dog from puppyhood, each has its rewards and challenges. Rearing a dog creates such a close bond that by the time they are 6 months old certain commands and task like recall come easy. That is if the dog was raised with kindness and love. However rearing a dog from puppyhood also means dealing with potty training, chewing and a number of other behaviors that most don’t want to tackle.
On the other hand, getting close to an adopted grown dog takes time and sometimes there is not enough to offset its lack of trust. This can make a simple command like recalling difficult to achieve and always put your dog at risk of running away. When you are adopting a dog have patience and keep him/her on leash at all times when not in the house or behind a secure fence. If your dog won’t come back to you in the back yard then you can be sure he won’t in the park.
